Fes is magical, but it is not suitcase-friendly. The medina is a maze of narrow lanes, steps, slopes, busy souks, and uneven paving. Even a cabin suitcase can become tiring after ten minutes.
The best way to visit Fes is simple: store your bags first, then enter the medina with only a small daypack.
Fes el-Bali is mostly pedestrian. Taxis stop at gates, not at most riad doors. Once inside, you may need to walk through crowded alleys, follow signs, ask directions, or meet your riad porter.
With luggage, you move slower, look more tired, and miss details. Without luggage, the medina becomes much easier to enjoy.
For first-time visitors, use clear gates and landmarks:
Ask your riad which gate is closest and whether they can send someone to meet you.
A comfortable half-day route:
This route is much easier with a guide, especially for a first visit.
Choose storage based on timing:
Keep valuables, passport, medication, and electronics in a small bag with you. Store only the luggage you do not need during the visit. Photograph your bags before drop-off and keep your booking confirmation.
Morning is calmer and cooler. Late afternoon is atmospheric but busier. Avoid entering deep into the medina near your train departure time unless you know the route out.
